What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium screw inserted into the jawbone, where it functions like an artificial tooth root. Once the screw has fused with the bone, a porcelain crown is attached, creating a natural-looking tooth that stays firmly in place, unlike removable dentures. Implant treatment is highly proven and, when properly cared for, can last a lifetime.
Why Dental Implants?
Missing teeth can disrupt everyday function, affecting speech and leaving an aesthetic gap that may lower self-confidence. If you need to replace one or several teeth, dental implants are an excellent solution, restoring both the look and the function of a full, healthy smile.
Benefits:
While dental implant treatment takes more time and is more costly than options like bridges or removable dentures, it is a highly worthwhile investment.
• Implants are securely integrated into the jawbone and do not risk coming loose like many other tooth replacements.
• They offer a very natural look and blend seamlessly with your existing teeth.
• With implants, there’s no need to drill into healthy neighboring teeth, as is required with traditional bridges.
• You care for your implant just like the rest of your natural teeth—no need to remove anything after meals.
• When properly maintained, implants can last a lifetime, meaning you won’t need to replace them like other prosthetics.

How does the treatment work?

Before the Treatment
Before undergoing implant treatment, you first need to meet with the treating dentist for a consultation. During the consultation, the area will be examined, both clinically and via X-rays, and together you will discuss your individual conditions, wishes and expectations for the treatment. You will also receive a preliminary cost estimate based on your needs and the extent of treatment needed. If you have not had your teeth examined by us in the last three months, it is important that it is done before starting implant treatment to rule out any diseases in the teeth and gums. Read more about what an examination involves. The consultation is completely free of obligations and you choose yourself after the consultation whether you wish to proceed with the treatment or not.

The Fixture Surgery
An implant, also called a fixture, is made of titanium and is a metal that the body perceives as its own and integrates into its own tissue. To get the screw in place, surgery is required under local anesthesia. An incision is made in the gums to expose the bone and the implant screw is surgically inserted into the jawbone. To prevent the gums from growing over the screw during the healing period, a metal cap is attached to the top and the area is sewn together with a few stitches. After that, 2-3 months of healing time are needed for the screw to integrate well into the bone before it can withstand the load from a dental crown.

After Healing
After the healing period, you will come back to us for a short check-up and an X-ray, and if everything looks good, an impression of your bite will be taken so that the dental technician can produce a custom-made crown for you. A color is selected that matches your other teeth and you can of course be involved in the selection. The crown is produced in a laboratory and after about 1-2 weeks it is ready to be put in place. In the vast majority of cases, you choose to screw the crown in order to have the option of removing it in the future if necessary. The screw is not visible to the eye as it is covered with a plastic filling, exactly the same material that is used to repair teeth. The dentist will then go through how to best care for your implant and keep the area clean to create the best possible conditions for a successful treatment. Then you are ready to shine with your new smile!
